Is it more fun to GM or Play?

Recently, I was asked if I like being a GM or a player more after all the years I have been doing this. Is that a fair question, or is it comparing apples to oranges?

Well, for me, it is like comparing apples to apples. I don’t find one to be superior to the other, but I certainly don’t use granny smith apples in my apple pie nor would I use a gala for a caramel apple. When I make an apple pie I want to use a crisp and mild apple to allow the spices to show through. This is like being a GM. You bring your story (apples) to the table and want them to be enjoyed with all the added wonder of the completed product once the small things are added. Your players and their choices are like the spices that complete the product.

As a player, the joy comes from bringing out your inner character, your flavor, if you will. The sweet-sour of a granny smith apple, sharp and complimented by the caramel, but not overtaken by it. As a player, if I can’t see my character’s identity through the world/ GM/ etc it feels trying to use a mild apple under caramel. The apple is there, but just barely making it less enjoyable.

Basically, both snacks are wonderful and they have their place. What am I in the mood for? Pie or candy covered? Do I want to weave a world or express individuality? Knowing what I am craving that particular day allows me to express all facets and keep from burning out or losing my love for games.
